Have you been living day to day just hoping you and your child can survive the realities of autism?
Would you like to learn how you and your child both can thrive instead?
Do you sometimes find it challenging to connect with your child?
Is your child mostly non-verbal, or otherwise unable to communicate freely?
Are you frustrated and impatient with your child at times, and then feeling guilty about it?
Are you afraid you’re not doing enough for your child, or even making the wrong choices?
Do you believe you are ready for the possibility of experiencing a spiritual connection with your child?
As you reflect on these questions it is important to know you are not alone. It is possible for you to create a relationship with yourself and with your child that helps you both to Thrive!
You can feel confident about the choices you’re making to help your child learn and grow to their unique potential by allowing them to be the unique human being they were born to be, without judgment.
As a parent, you already have a unique, natural connection and way of communicating with your child. It may not feel like it right now, but its there, waiting to be discovered and celebrated. You don’t have to create something from scratch. Its built in. You just have to learn how to access it.
You may be feeling stuck and miserable because sometimes you’re just not feeling all that close to your child. Then you’re feeling guilty because you have this distance between the two of you that seems unnatural for a parent. Unfortunately, when you feel bad, its harder to reach your child and feel your connection, and that just leaves you feeling like a failure.
You’re not a bad parent. Nothing’s wrong with you, its just that the autism gets in the way of relating to your child the way you expect to. Our children with autism do not fit into the traditional parenting model you may have learned from your own parents, or from all the parenting guides and resources you may have read. And when we keep looking for our kids to show us how they feel and what they know in the usual ways, we set ourselves up for disappointment and frustration. You don’t feel like you’re getting a connection with your child because you’re not sure how to look for it. You’re missing the signs, because you tend to be focused on what is considered to be normal childhood development.
I encourage you to get as much support as you can for your child and for yourself as you navigate your life with autism.
